New bachelor degree programme produces sustainable building engineers

Finland’s largest university of applied sciences, Metropolia in Helsinki, launched this autumn a new international degree programme in civil engineering. The students will specialize in sustainable building engineering and become experts in, for example, energy efficiency of buildings.

Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) – influences on building design in Finland

Energy efficiency requirements for new buildings will be tightened in July 2012 through the new building code D3. In the near future the use of renewable energy will definitely be included in the regulations. According to EU provisions, public buildings should be at the nearly zero energy level after 2018 and the all other buildings after 2020.

The Scanvac organization

Scanvac is a body for the promotion of close cooperation between the national HVAC societies.They are professional and technical societies devoted to promoting the arts and sciences of heat-ing, ventilating, air conditioning and allied technologies and training activities in these fields.

The corresponding societies in the Baltic states Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are associated members of Scanvac.
